Visas and residence

Freelance visa in Dubai: how residence works for freelancers

A freelance visa in Dubai is a UAE residence visa based on your own freelance permit or licence instead of an employer. You first get a permit for your field from a free zone or another licensing authority, then apply for residence through that authority. A separate long-term route, the five-year Green Visa for freelancers, needs a MOHRE freelance permit and set education and income conditions.

What a freelance visa is

"Freelance visa" is the everyday name, not an official visa category. What people mean is a residence visa that rests on their own permission to work for themselves. Instead of an employer sponsoring you, the authority that issued your freelance permit or licence supports your residence. You then invoice clients under that permit, within the activities it lists.

There are two main routes. Most freelancers in Dubai hold a freelance permit or a freelancer licence from a free zone, such as a media, technology or general business zone, and apply for residence through that zone. The second route is the Green Visa for freelancers, a five-year residence that needs no employer. The official Green Visa conditions include a freelance work permit from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE), a minimum education level and a minimum income from self-employment, or proof of financial solvency.

Rules for freelancers have become stricter in practice. Free zones increasingly ask for evidence that your work matches your declared expertise, and they can ask for more at renewal. Your Caliph consultant checks the current requirements of each route before you apply.

Who a freelance visa suits

Creative and media professionals

Designers, writers, photographers, videographers and content creators who work for several clients.

Technology freelancers

Developers, IT consultants and digital specialists who sell their time and skill rather than products.

Consultants and trainers

Independent professionals in marketing, education, management and similar fields.

People leaving a job

Residents moving from employment to self-employment who want to stay in the UAE on their own permit.

Freelance permit or your own company

A freelance permit is personal. It lets you work in your own name in a defined field, and it usually does not let you hire staff, sponsor employees or trade in goods. It is a good fit when you are the business.

A one-person company, on the mainland or in a free zone, is a separate legal entity. It can hold several activities, hire people, sponsor visas for employees and grow into a larger business. It usually takes more paperwork than a freelance permit, but it removes the limits.

If you expect to hire within a year or two, sell products, or work with clients who only contract with companies, a company is often the better start. Your consultant compares both for your field. See free zone company setup and the professional licence for the company route.

What to have ready

  • Your passport copy, valid for at least six months
  • A recent personal photograph
  • Your CV and proof of qualifications for your field
  • A portfolio, client contracts or other evidence of past work
  • Your current UAE visa and Emirates ID, if you already live here
  • Bank statements showing freelance income, often asked for at renewal
  • For the Green Visa, attested degree certificates and proof of income or financial solvency

Each authority sets its own list, and some fields need a permit from a sector regulator as well. Your consultant gives you the exact list for your route.

How a freelance visa application works

  1. Free consultation

You tell us your field, your clients and your plans. We confirm which route and authority fit.

  2. Evidence pack

We put together your qualifications, portfolio and proof of work so they match the permit you are applying for.

  3. Freelance permit or licence

Caliph applies for the permit or licence in your field with the issuing authority.

  4. Entry permit or status change

If you are abroad you receive an entry permit. If you are already in the UAE, we file a change of status.

  5. Medical test and Emirates ID

You take the medical fitness test and give your Emirates ID biometrics in the UAE.

  6. Residence issued

The residence visa is issued and linked to your Emirates ID. Family applications can follow where allowed.

Timeline and cost

The timeline depends on the route, your field, how complete your evidence is and whether you are inside or outside the UAE. The permit or licence comes first, then the entry permit or change of status, then the medical test and Emirates ID. A Green Visa application has its own assessment.

Costs depend on the authority, the package and whether you add dependants. Authorities revise their fees, so we do not list prices here. Book a free consultation and your consultant will set out the current cost of each route for your field before you commit.

Good to know

  • Work only within the activities on your permit. Taking work outside that scope, even briefly, can cause problems at renewal.
  • Keep your invoices and bank records in order from the first month. Authorities can ask for proof of real freelance work and client payments when you renew.
  • Renew on time. A lapsed permit puts the residence visa at risk.
  • Freelancers in media fields may also need to deal with the UAE Media Council, in addition to the free zone.
  • You may still need to register for corporate tax or VAT as a self-employed person, depending on your income. See our corporate tax page.

Questions people ask

What is a freelance visa in Dubai?

It is a UAE residence visa that is based on your own freelance permit or licence instead of an employer. The authority that issued your permit, usually a free zone, supports your residence. There is also a five-year Green Visa for freelancers with its own conditions.

Who issues freelance permits in Dubai?

Most freelance permits are issued by free zone authorities for specific fields such as media, technology, education or consulting. The Green Visa for freelancers needs a freelance work permit from MOHRE. Your consultant tells you which authority covers your field.

What is the Green Visa for freelancers?

It is a five-year UAE residence that needs no employer. The official conditions include a freelance work permit from MOHRE, at least a bachelor's degree or specialised diploma, and a minimum income from self-employment over the previous two years or proof of financial solvency.

Can I sponsor my family on a freelance visa?

Often yes, if you meet the sponsorship conditions that apply to your residence, such as income and housing requirements. The rules depend on the route and the authority. Your consultant checks your position before you apply for dependants.

Can I hire staff on a freelance permit?

A freelance permit is usually for you alone and does not let you sponsor employees. If you plan to hire, a one-person company on the mainland or in a free zone is normally the better structure.

Do I need to prove my experience to get a freelance permit?

Increasingly, yes. Free zones commonly ask for qualifications, a portfolio, client contracts or other proof that your freelance work matches your field, and they can ask again at renewal. A well prepared evidence pack makes the application smoother.

Can I apply for a freelance visa from outside the UAE?

You can start the permit application from abroad and enter on an entry permit once it is approved. The medical fitness test and Emirates ID biometrics are done in the UAE, so you need to be in the country for that part.
