Overview

DMCC was established in 2002 with a clear brief: make Dubai a place where physical commodities are traded, stored and financed. The district it built, Jumeirah Lakes Towers, grew into a full neighbourhood of office and residential towers around Almas Tower, the DMCC headquarters. Uptown Dubai is the newer part of the same free zone.

The commodities roots still shape the zone. DMCC set up the Dubai Diamond Exchange, the Dubai Gold and Commodities Exchange, the DMCC Tea Centre and the DMCC Coffee Centre, so traders in those goods find counterparties, storage and services close by. Around them it has added sector groupings for crypto, gaming, artificial intelligence, e-commerce and financial services.

DMCC is not the lightest free zone to enter. Every company needs a registered office address inside the district, the application passes a pre-approval review, and certain activities need approval from a second regulator. In return you join a community that DMCC puts at more than 26,000 member companies. Caliph prepares the application and helps you choose an office that fits.

Why companies choose DMCC

A trading community already in place

Gold, diamond, tea, coffee and energy traders work alongside the exchanges, storage and service firms their trade depends on.

A government authority as regulator

DMCC is a Government of Dubai authority. It registers the company, issues the licence and handles the application through its own online portal.

An address in a lived-in district

JLT has offices, homes, hotels, restaurants and clinics in the same cluster of towers, so your team can live and work in one area.

Room to grow inside the zone

You can start on a flexi desk and move to a serviced or private office as the team grows, without changing your licensing authority.

A place for newer sectors

DMCC runs dedicated groupings for crypto, gaming and AI companies. Regulated activities in these fields still need the relevant approvals first.

What to have ready for DMCC

  • Passport copy for each shareholder, director and authorised signatory
  • UAE residence visa and Emirates ID copies, if you have them
  • Proof of your home address, such as a utility bill or bank statement
  • The proposed company name and the activities you want on the licence
  • The planned shareholding structure and details of the ultimate beneficial owners
  • For a subsidiary or branch: the parent company's memorandum and articles and its ownership documents
  • The lease or property documents for your DMCC office, once it is chosen

DMCC can ask for more depending on your activity and where the shareholders are based. Your Caliph consultant confirms what applies to you.

How DMCC company setup works

  1. Activity and structure check

Your consultant matches your business to the DMCC activity list and settles whether you register as a new company, a subsidiary or a branch.

  2. Pre-approval application

The online pre-approval application goes to DMCC through its portal with the shareholder and business details.

  3. Documents signed

Once DMCC clears the application, the company documents are signed through the portal and the registration fees are paid.

  4. Office selected

You choose a flexi desk, serviced office or private office in the district, and the lease details are added to the file.

  5. Licence issued

DMCC completes the registration and issues the licence electronically.

  6. Visas and bank file

Caliph opens the establishment card, applies for residence visas and prepares the documents your bank asks for.

Good to know

  • Activities in financial services, crypto and virtual assets, healthcare and energy can need approval from another regulator before DMCC issues the licence.
  • Selling directly to mainland customers needs a separate mainland arrangement. If that is part of your plan, raise it with your consultant before you apply.
  • The office type you choose affects how many residence visas the company can apply for. Share your hiring plan early.

Questions people ask

Where is DMCC located?

DMCC is in Dubai. The free zone covers Jumeirah Lakes Towers, usually called JLT, and the newer Uptown Dubai district. Almas Tower in JLT is the DMCC headquarters. A company licensed by DMCC must have its registered office address inside the DMCC area.

Is DMCC only for commodities companies?

No. DMCC was created for commodities trade and remains strong in gold, diamonds, tea, coffee and energy. It also licenses service, trading and industrial activities, and it has groupings for technology, gaming, crypto, e-commerce and financial services. Your consultant checks that your exact activity is on the DMCC list.

Do I need a physical office to set up in DMCC?

Yes. Every DMCC company needs a registered office address inside the DMCC district. That can be a flexi desk, a serviced office or a private office. The choice affects visa allocation, so it is worth deciding with your hiring plan in mind.

What types of company can I register in DMCC?

DMCC offers three routes. Individual shareholders can form a new company, an existing company can set up a subsidiary, and a company can register a branch. Subsidiaries and branches need the parent company's documents. Your consultant recommends the route that fits how you want to own the business.

Can I set up a crypto company in DMCC?

DMCC has a dedicated grouping for crypto businesses and lists crypto and virtual asset activities as subject to regulatory approval. What you need depends on the exact activity. Caliph checks the requirement before you apply, so you know which approval comes first.

How is DMCC different from other Dubai free zones?

DMCC is a commodities and office district run by a Government of Dubai authority, and it expects every company to hold an office address in the zone. Port and airport zones are built around cargo and warehousing. Zones aimed at small service firms ask for less office commitment. The right one depends on your activity.
