Sharjah free zone company setup: choosing the right zone
Sharjah has several free zones, each with its own authority and its own focus. The best known are SAIF Zone beside Sharjah International Airport, Hamriyah Free Zone on the coast for industry and maritime firms, Sharjah Media City (Shams) for media and freelancers, Sharjah Publishing City (SPC Free Zone) and the Sharjah Research, Technology and Innovation Park (SRTIP). Caliph compares them against your activity, visas and budget.

Sharjah free zones at a glance
A Sharjah free zone company is licensed by the authority of the zone it sits in, not by the Sharjah Economic Development Department. Like free zones in other emirates, each zone has its own regulations, activity list, workspace options and visa rules. What sets Sharjah apart is the spread: an airport zone, a port-side industrial zone, a media zone, a publishing zone and a research and technology park all sit in one emirate.
That spread is useful, but it also means the wrong choice is easy to make. A media freelancer and a steel trader both search for a Sharjah free zone, yet they need completely different zones. Start with what the business does and where the goods or clients are, and the shortlist usually becomes one or two zones.
Free zones revise their packages and rules regularly, so this page stays general. Your Caliph consultant confirms the current position for your activity before you commit.
The main free zones in Sharjah
SAIF Zone
The Sharjah Airport International Free Zone, set up in 1995 next to Sharjah International Airport. It issues trade, service and industrial licences and leases offices, warehouses and land. A good fit for trading, logistics and light manufacturing that needs air cargo access.
Hamriyah Free Zone
An industrial free zone run by the Hamriyah Free Zone Authority and served by its own port. It suits manufacturers, oil and gas suppliers, maritime businesses and traders who need land, a warehouse or quay access.
Sharjah Media City (Shams)
Created in 2017 by Emiri decree for media and creative business. It serves freelancers, startups and small companies that need a licence and a registered address more than a large office.
Sharjah Publishing City (SPC Free Zone)
Established in 2017 with a focus on print and publishing and on entrepreneurship. Its licence categories also cover trade, consultancy, technology and online sales, and the zone lists more than 2,000 activities.
Sharjah Research, Technology and Innovation Park (SRTIP)
A research and innovation park that became an independent free zone authority in 2023, after merging with the Sharjah Oasis for Technology and Innovation. It is aimed at technology, research and innovation companies.
Sharjah also has smaller and newer zones. If your activity is specialised, your consultant checks which authorities license it before shortlisting.
How to choose between Sharjah free zones
Moving goods. If you import, export or store stock, look first at SAIF Zone for air cargo and Hamriyah for sea freight and industrial land. Both offer warehouses, which the service-focused zones are not built around.
Selling a service or your own skill. Consultants, agencies, creators and freelancers usually compare Shams and SPC Free Zone. Both are built for small companies, and the right one depends on whether your activity is on the media list, the publishing list or the general business list.
Building technology or doing research. SRTIP is designed for technology and research companies that want to be part of an innovation ecosystem.
Selling to customers in Sharjah city. If you need a shop, a showroom or a workshop open to the public in Sharjah, a Sharjah mainland licence from SEDD may suit you better than any free zone.
Who a Sharjah free zone suits
Founders watching overheads
Sharjah zones offer packages for small companies, and many founders compare them with Dubai zones on total yearly cost.
People who live in Sharjah or the northern emirates
A company close to home makes visits to the zone, the medical centre and the bank simpler.
Traders and manufacturers
Airport and port access, warehouses and industrial land make SAIF Zone and Hamriyah practical bases for physical goods.
Media, publishing and creative work
Shams and SPC Free Zone were set up for these sectors, so their activity lists fit them closely.
What to have ready
- A passport copy for each shareholder and the manager
- Your UAE visa page and Emirates ID, if you already live in the UAE
- Proof of residential address for each shareholder
- Two or three company name options
- A short description of the business and the activities you want
- For a corporate shareholder, the parent company documents and a board resolution
Each Sharjah zone sets its own checklist. Industrial and regulated activities can need a business plan, site details or outside approvals. Your consultant gives you the list for the zone you choose.
How setup in a Sharjah free zone works
Free consultation
You explain the business, the customers and the visas you need. We shortlist the zones that license your activity.
Choose the zone and package
We compare workspace, visa allocation and cost across the shortlist, and you pick the zone.
Name and application
Caliph reserves the name and submits the application with your documents.
Licence and company documents
After approval you sign the company documents and the zone issues the licence.
Residence visas
We handle the entry permit or status change, the medical test, the Emirates ID and the visa.
Bank account and tax
We prepare the bank file and check your corporate tax and VAT registration.
Timeline and cost
How long a Sharjah free zone setup takes depends on the zone, the activity, any outside approvals and whether you need a warehouse or land. A service licence with a desk is usually faster than an industrial licence with a facility. Residence visas, the bank account and tax registration then follow.
Costs differ widely between zones and packages, and zones change their offers through the year. We do not publish prices on this page. Book a free consultation and your consultant will set out the current cost for the zones on your shortlist, side by side, before you pay anything.
Why compare Sharjah zones with Caliph
Caliph has formed more than 3,000 companies since 2020, on the mainland and across the free zones. We do not push one zone. Your consultant looks at your activity, your visa plans, where your customers are and your budget, then compares the Sharjah zones that fit with options in Dubai, Ajman and other emirates. One consultant then handles the application, the visas, the medical test and Emirates ID, and the bank file.
Questions people ask
What free zones are there in Sharjah?
The main ones are SAIF Zone (Sharjah Airport International Free Zone), Hamriyah Free Zone, Sharjah Media City (Shams), Sharjah Publishing City (SPC Free Zone) and the Sharjah Research, Technology and Innovation Park (SRTIP). Each has its own authority, activity list and workspace options.
Which Sharjah free zone is best for a small business or freelancer?
Service businesses and freelancers usually compare Shams and SPC Free Zone, which are built for small companies. The right one depends on whether your activity is on its list and how many visas you need. Your consultant checks your exact activity with both.
Which Sharjah free zone suits trading and logistics?
SAIF Zone sits beside Sharjah International Airport and leases offices, warehouses and land, which suits air cargo and trading. Hamriyah has its own port and industrial land, which suits sea freight, manufacturing and maritime firms.
Can a Sharjah free zone company work in Dubai?
A free zone company can serve clients across the UAE and abroad within its licence. Selling goods to the mainland or opening premises in another emirate needs the right structure and approvals. Tell your consultant how you plan to sell so the setup is right from the start.
Is a Sharjah free zone cheaper than a Dubai free zone?
It depends on the package, the activity and the visas. Some Sharjah packages are aimed at small budgets, but Dubai zones also run offers. Caliph compares the real yearly cost of the options on your shortlist in a free consultation.
Can I own 100% of a Sharjah free zone company?
Yes. Free zone companies in Sharjah can be fully foreign owned without a local partner. Activities that need outside approval still have to meet the regulator's conditions.
